The Energy Star Most Efficient Label: Look For It When You're Making A Major Purchase

December 18, 2012 | Blog

When you’re shopping for new HVAC equipment, appliances, electronics or other devices that consume energy, probably the most reliable indicator of the item’s efficiency is the Energy Star label. Products that carry the Energy Star symbol have been tested and certified in federal government laboratories to meet strict energy-efficiency standards. In 2011, the federal Energy Star program launched an even more exclusive label for the products that meet the highest energy efficiency standards: the Energy Star Most Efficient label.

In general, consumers can expect Energy Star-certified appliances and equipment to be significantly more energy efficient than non-certified models without sacrificing performance. Air conditioners with the Energy Star label, for example, are often as much as 14 percent more efficient, with higher Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) numbers than standard units.

Items that carry the Energy Star Most Efficient label are among the top 5 percent of products that have already been awarded the Energy Star designation.

Among products where you can find the Energy Star Most Efficient label:

  • Clothes washers
  • Heating and cooling equipment such as furnaces and air conditioners
  • Televisions
  • Refrigerator-freezer combinations

The Energy Star program is a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It is designed to promote energy conservation and awareness by providing information to consumers who regularly use household equipment, electronics and other products that use energy to function. The program encourages reasonable energy conservation measures and the use of products that operate at their highest possible level of efficiency.

Look for the Energy Star symbols on the product’s EnergyGuide label. This label contains important information about the equipment or device, including:

  • Manufacturer name and address.
  • Important features of the product.
  • Cost and power usage ranges for similar models.
  • Estimated annual electricity usage and operating costs.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
