Spare Your A/C Compressor With These Energy-Saving Tips

September 24, 2013 | Blog

Cooling season may be winding down in the rest of the country, but here in Texas, it lasts a lot longer. How is your air conditioner compressor holding up? Even if it’s doing a fine job, you can help it along by following some smart energy-saving tips. They’ll not only spare your A/C compressor, but also save you some money.

Reduce Use

Easing the load on your air conditioner helps to spare your compressor.

  • Continue to use your ceiling fans. They allow you to set your thermostat a few degrees higher. Just remember to turn off the fan when nobody’s in the room.
  • Avoid using heat-generating appliances–such as the oven and the clothes dryer–during the hottest part of the day. Use them in the evening or early morning.
  • Decrease humidity by running the exhaust fan in the bathroom when you’re showering. Run hot-water appliances such as the dishwasher in the evening.
  • Keep doors and windows closed and shades drawn to block out the sun
  • If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, get one. Set it to go up a few degrees when you leave for work and go down again shortly before you come home.

Get Regular Maintenance

Maintain your air conditioner, and your compressor will do a better job. There are things you can do, and there are things that are best left to an HVAC-system professional.

  • What you can do: Check the air filter monthly, and replace it when it looks dirty. Keep the area around the condenser free of obstructions, such as trash cans, toys and vegetation. And occasionally hose off the condenser.
  • What your HVAC professional should do: Schedule an annual A/C tune-up, preferably at the start of each cooling season. Your technician will clean all the components, check the wiring, tighten the connections, make sure the thermostat is running correctly and recharge the refrigerant, if necessary.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
