Which of These Four Types of A/C Works Best for Corpus Christi?

June 24, 2014 | Blog

Before you pick your next air conditioner (A/C), it’s important to know what options are available to you. There are four types of A/C in general, but as you will see as you learn about them, not all are good options for your South Texas home.

  1. Split systems. This is likely the type that you are familiar with. A split system A/C consists of an indoor evaporator unit, but also an outdoor condenser unit. The outside unit also contains the very important compressor pump. Installation is simple if you already have the ductwork in place, which you will if you have a central furnace or an existing split system A/C.

  2. Heat pumps. One of the most efficient options in general is a heat pump. There are multiple types of pumps, but most can both provide hot or cold air to your house. They also require ductwork to circulate air, just like split systems. Their biggest drawback is that they don’t perform well in extreme environments where it gets very cold. Since we have very mild winters for the most part a Heat Pump is a much better option than electric heat.

  3. Packaged central A/Cs. While not typically an option for residential A/C, ask your contractor if it’s an option for your specific home. A packaged A/C is essentially one very large unit that is mounted on the home’s foundation or roof. Instead of traditional ductwork it uses ductwork that runs through the exterior walls.

  4. Ductless mini-split systems. There are a number of reasons you may not want to have ductwork in your home. In this case, a ductless mini-split system might be your best option. While it still has the outdoor condenser unit, on the inside there are only wall-mounted units. There can be one or more indoor units that have blowers to move the air around your home.

Great Company

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
