Is It Time to Repair or Replace Your Home's HVAC System?

May 12, 2015 | Blog

You don’t want to be without home cooling in South Texas when warmer temperatures set in. If your home HVAC system is on the fritz or if it’s just not getting the job done, it may be time to consider whether repair is worth the expense, or if you’re better off with a new HVAC unit.

Is Repair the Best Option?

Annual maintenance for your HVAC system is important to prevent malfunctions and repairs, such as pinhole refrigerant leaks due to a lack of coil cleaning. You should also consider the system’s age. A/Cs and heat pumps are typically reliable for eight to 10 years. Even with regular maintenance of HVAC equipment in Coastal Bend homes, eight to 10 years may be the maximum life span for many units with the high cooling demand and heavy usage expected of them.

Time to Replace?

An HVAC replacement is a substantial home investment. Ask your HVAC technician to calculate the lifetime costs of heating or cooling equipment you may install. This will help you decide if immediate comfort and return on investment (ROI) in the form of energy savings are worthwhile. You can weigh these figures with the cost of the repair. In general, if the cost of the HVAC repair is 40 percent or more of the cost of a replacement, you may be wise to go ahead and install a new unit, especially if your current system is more than 10 years old.

The performance of your ailing HVAC equipment is a factor. If your home has uneven temperatures and humidity problems, the old unit wasn’t doing its job to maximum efficiency. A new standard or high-efficiency model will likely serve your home cooling and heating needs better.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
