New Air Conditioning? Make Sure its the Right Size. Because Bigger Systems Aren't Better

April 20, 2011 | Blog

When you live in Texas, you want air conditioning that is going to keep you cool when the Corpus Christi temperature heats up. Your first instinct is to go out and buy the biggest model you can find to make sure that it can pump loads of cool air throughout your home. However, when it comes to air conditioning, Bigger is NOT Better.

The best A/C unit for your home is the one that is sized right to match your house and local conditions. Before you buy a new air conditioning unit there are several things to keep in mind.  Have you done any energy-saving improvements to the home?  Have you sealed air leaks on the home or ductwork?  Have you added insulation?  Better windows, or a new roof?   It is important to take all these changes to the home into consideration when choosing the size of your new air conditioning system.  Most systems in Corpus Christi are oversized, to begin with, and if you make energy efficiency improvements to your home it will make your system even more oversized.  I almost never recommend going up in size, and very often I recommend going down in size.

An air conditioning system that is too small will not keep you comfortable during the peak of the summer, but an air conditioner that is too big will cost you more money in energy bills and will not control humidity in your home.  A unit that is too big will short cycle.  What this means is that it will come on cool the house down quickly and cut off.  While this may sound good it is very inefficient.  It is like driving your car in stop-and-go traffic compared to steady highway driving.  Every time your system starts it is like flooring it in your car.  Very inefficient.   Each start-up your air conditioner takes between 8 to 12 minutes to get up to its peak efficiency and to start removing moisture from the air.  If your unit is only running for 10 to 15 minutes at a time then it is operating very inefficiently and is not removing much moisture.

Another thing to consider is if you are looking at replacing your air conditioning system and you can make some energy improvements to your home before replacing it, then you can in many cases reduce the size of the A/C system you are purchasing and reduce your initial cost of equipment and reduce your ongoing energy bills.

Great Company

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
