Ten Ways To Optimize Your Indoor Air Quality

September 8, 2011 | Blog

Do you feel like the air in your home is stuffy, smelly or otherwise polluted?  You could be lacking important ventilation for keeping the air fresh and clean.  If you want to noticeably improve your home’s indoor air quality, there are 10 simple steps you need to take.  These steps were created by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), so you know they’re worthwhile.

  1. Vent combustible appliances and machinery such as furnaces and heaters to the exterior of the home.
  2. Vent kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms to the outside.  Use quiet, energy-efficient fans to accomplish this.
  3. Place air conditioners, furnaces and ducts away from polluted spaces like the garage where they could pull contaminants into the indoor air.  If ductwork must pass through a potentially polluted space, seal them well so contaminants aren’t picked up or air leaked out.
  4. Make sure hearth products such as wood stoves and fireplaces are properly vented to the home’s exterior.
  5. Use a high-efficiency filter in your air-handling system so dirt is kept out of the air and away from heating and cooling equipment.  Clean or replace the filter as required.
  6. Vent clothes dryers directly outside.
  7. Store potentially dangerous substances including paint, solvents, pesticide and cleaners out of the occupied areas of the home and well away from intake vents.
  8. Avoid frequent use of combustion sources that lack a vent, including cigarettes, candles, vent-free heaters and indoor barbecues.
  9. Distribute fresh outdoor air throughout your home by using natural or mechanical ventilation, depending on the outdoor conditions at the time.
  10. Make sure every room of your home has a window or some form of mechanical ventilation so events such as cleaning the home and painting a wall can be ventilated and less harmful to the occupants breathing the indoor air.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
