Save Energy Dollars This Winter -- Reduce Your Heating Load

February 7, 2012 | Blog

Winter is a good time of year to go through your home and look for places where you can save energy dollars. The weather has cooled and it’s much easier to be outdoors or in the attic. Between stopping air from flowing in or out of your home and increasing attic insulation, you’ll start to save on heating and cooling your home immediately.
Air Infiltration

  • Check for leaks around your home’s exterior. Look at the seams between your window frames and the exterior. If you see gaps, use caulk to seal them, preventing air from coming inside. If you have pipes or electrical wires entering your home, look at the joints. If there are holes or gaps, seal tightly with caulk or expanding foam.
  • Your windows may be a source of significant energy loss in your home. On a breezy day, light a stick of incense and move it around the window frames indoors. If the smoke wavers, the window isn’t sealing properly. Consider adding weatherstripping or upgrading the windows with Energy Star or thermal windows. You can also cover the inside of the windows with clear plastic window kits to reduce drafts in the winter.
  • Inspect your exterior doors. If you can feel any cold air coming indoors or see daylight through the door and the frame, you have air leaks. Add weatherstripping or foam tape to tighten the seal. You also can add a door sweep to the bottom of the door to lower airflow inside and out.

Insulation

  • Check insulation levels in your attic. If the attic floor joists are higher than your insulation, you likely need more.
  • You can call us at Mathews CCAC to come out and give you a free insulation evaluation to see if adding additional insulation would be cost-effective for you.
  • Either Batt insulation or blown-in can be used to add additional insulation to your attic.  The fiberglass blown-in type fills all the cracks and voids much better than the batts and creates a better insulation seal to save you more energy.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
