Heat Pump Problem? What Next?

March 26, 2013 | Blog

A serious heat pump problem can leave you in an uncomfortable situation in your South Texas home. You can end up either too warm or too cold depending on what Mother Nature sends your way. There are a few simple things you can check. If they don’t solve your problem, a service call from a trusted professional will be necessary.

Common heat pump problems:

  • Unit will not run
  • Not producing heat
  • Unit froze up
  • Cycling incorrectly – too often, not often enough
  • Blower not coming on

What to check first

  • Thermostat settings – is everything correct?
  • Clean or change the air filter if necessary; check it regularly.
  • Check to make sure power is going to the unit, and reset circuit breakers if needed.
  • Ensure that room registers are open and unblocked.
  • Check the outdoor unit and make sure it’s free of yard debris and other material.

Signs your heat pump problem warrants professional help

  • Unit is making unusual noises such as squealing or grinding.
  • Outdoor unit is encased in ice.
  • You notice unusual odors.
  • You have tried the simple fixes and they have not worked.

If you have tried the simple fixes, noticed signs of a serious problem or have any other concerns, contact your HVAC contractor for professional advice. Making repairs on your unit yourself without proper knowledge could end up turning a minor repair into a major one. Certain components of your heat pump can be easily damaged.

A great way to help prevent a heat pump problem in the first place is to have an annual service check done by your HVAC professional. Your contractor can make sure your system is in good working order so you’re ready for whatever temperatures come your way.

Great Company

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
