How To Know Whether to Repair or Replace HVAC Equipment

February 6, 2014 | Blog

HVAC systems are expensive, both to install and to replace. When dealing with a shady HVAC contractor, this important financial decision is too often influenced by what’s best for their finances. Here are some guidelines to help you objectively decide whether to repair or replace HVAC equipment:

  1. Are you in need of a big repair or constant repairs?  Similar to a car, one of the easiest ways to know it’s time for a replacement is when you start having to replace major parts or have problems so often that you could quickly pay for a new unit with what you’re paying for repairs.
  2. Is your system more than ten years old? The industry has seen major gains in energy efficiency over the past decade due to technological advances and increased regulation. Upgrading to a new, energy-efficient model may cut your utility bills in half.
  3. Is your system the right size? If your homebuilder was looking to cut costs, or you’ve added rooms, your HVAC system may be too small. If it’s struggling to keep your home comfortable, upgrade to a larger unit. The reverse is also true — if it constantly cycles on and off, wearing it out faster and meaning the temperature probably isn’t being distributed evenly, the unit is probably too large and should also be downsized.
  4. Is your system still under warranty? Some manufacturers offer extended warranties, so always check to see if repairs are covered before making any decisions and take the free repairs that are available.
  5. Does one part of your system definitely need replacement? HVAC systems consist of both an inside coil unit and outside condenser unit. These units are designed to work together, so efficiency is lost if you only replace one. In addition, since they were likely installed together, both parts are likely about due for replacement.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
