Don't Be Deceived -- Window Moisture Could Mean Trouble to Your A/C

 If your home is properly sealed to prevent air leaks, but moisture is still forming on the windows, there may be a problem with your HVAC unit. Damage to window sills and wall plaster may result from water droplets collecting on sills or running down the walls. Mold can form if this continues over time. Resolving the problem quickly is the best way to avoid costly repairs. A qualified technician can test your system and recommend a solution.

There are several conditions in your A/C that can cause excess window moisture:

• The air filter may be dirty or clogged. Replacing the air filter is a simple task that is very important to the efficient operation of your HVAC unit. Reduced airflow from a clogged filter may lead to condensation and higher humidity.
• An oversized air conditioner can cause short cycling. In other words, the larger capacity cools your home too quickly, which turns off the system briefly until it kicks on again, with the cycle repeating throughout the day. This will cause rapid cooling without a reduction in humidity, leading to condensation and window moisture.
• A blockage or leak in the ductwork will reduce airflow, leading to condensation forming throughout your home.
• The refrigerant level may be under- or over-charged causing your A/C to be less effective and over-worked. Higher humidity and window moisture may develop from this condition.

The cause of window moisture can be hard to pinpoint. If you suspect the HVAC unit is the source of the problem, a certified technician can test the equipment to ensure it is working correctly. Specialized tools carried by qualified technicians are needed to test the system properly. A newly installed HVAC unit should be sized correctly for the size of your home. Condensation should not be left untreated because of the damages that may result in all areas of your home.
