Save Energy this Season with Proper Attic Insulation

January 28, 2016 | Blog

Save Energy this Season with Proper Attic InsulationIf you are looking to save energy this winter as you keep your home warm during the year’s colder months, attic insulation may be a cost-effective way to do so. With a little bit of attention and added insulation in your attic, your home can stay warmer without additional strain on your HVAC system. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you look to improve the insulation in your attic.

Attic Insulation Tips and Tricks

Before you add insulation, measure to see if you have enough. You should have 11 inches of fiberglass or rock wool or eight inches of cellulose insulation. If you do not have this, or if you still feel drafts in your home during the winter, then you could benefit from adding some insulation. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Wear a long-sleeve shirt and eye protection before beginning.
  • Ensure that the soffit vents stay open through the process.
  • Avoid placing insulation over can lights that aren’t rated for contact with insulation.
  • Check to ensure the attic is properly sealed to prevent heat loss.

Choose the Right Type Of Insulation

Next, choose the right type of insulation. Rolled batt insulation you can add yourself if you have good attic access, but loose-fill fiberglass or cellulose, which is faster to install, requires professional insulation. Both provide excellent insulating properties, but loose-fill insulation is more thorough as it can get into crevices and does not leave gaps that are possible with insulation rolls.

Regardless of which type you choose, adding insulation may be the answer to your cold house problems. If you have further questions about how you can make your Coastal Bend home efficient this winter, contact the team at CCAC for help.
