Landscaping Tips to Keep Your A/C Unit From Being an Eyesore

August 4, 2016 | Blog

Landscaping Tips to Keep Your A/C Unit From Being an EyesoreA split-system A/C unit consists of an indoor air handler that conveniently installs out of sight. If only the outdoor unit of your A/C system weren’t such a landscaping eyesore, then your yard, garden, or outdoor living space would be more fun, serene, and inviting. So, if you want to hide the albatross of your backyard, read on to learn clever and creative ways to disguise and hide it.

Cooling Performance in Mind

Before you start planning your grand designs to conceal that big, ugly, and noise A/C box next to your home, keep in mind the factors that affect cooling efficiency. Your A/C system needs free airflow to the sides and top of the unit.

Putting solid or obstructing barriers too close to the unit for the sake of hiding could likely reduce efficiency and even cause damage. Make sure any landscaping design you decide on doesn’t block airflow.

Screening the A/C

Screen structures instantly conceal your A/C unit all year long. Your screen could be constructed to match a nearby fence, wall, or vegetation. You may also consider installing a beautiful painted trellis with adorning plants to help disguise the A/C unit.

Permanent structures may also double as a storage area for your gardening tools. Remember to allow ample access for your HVAC maintenance and service calls.

Planting Ideas

If you are installing a trellis or lattice screen, consider planting small climbing vines for an attractive feature to your landscaping. Planting fruits, vegetables, and herbs can spice up your yard, too. However, don’t plant anything that is going to drop fruit near the unit.

Consider a landscaping design that provides shade. It’s easier to work in the shade than in the sun for your A/C unit, too! Just don’t plant anything with foliage so thick that it obstructs airflow.

Keep in mind the noise that the unit makes and how you may dampen it. Plants may work better than solid barriers that sound will bounce off of.
