Back-to-School HVAC System Tips

Back-to-School HVAC System TipsAs you prepare to pack your kids off to school, you can also enjoy the prospect of cooler weather on the horizon. But before you break out the hot cocoa, you should take the time to make sure your home HVAC system is ready for the winter weather. Here are a few tips to make sure you stay warm when the summer heat is gone:

  • Get your seasonal maintenance done. Seasonal maintenance is what keeps your appliances running smoothly and efficiently all year round. It can also help prevent larger problems from developing by catching small ones early on — and if you have a new system, it may just be required by your warranty.
  • Seal air leaks around your home. Hopefully, you’ll have take the time to test your home for air leaks so that you’re not trying to air condition the entire neighborhood. If you haven’t gotten around to it this cooling season, take a look around your home and fix any leaks before cold drafts start coming in.
  • Clean your indoor and outdoor coils, especially if you have a heat pump. Dust on the coils functions as a layer of insulation, which cuts down the efficiency of your A/C or pump.
  • Change your air filters. The HVAC air filter plays a simple but critical role: it prevents dust buildup inside your central air appliances, as well as keeping pieces of debris such as paper or loose insulation away from the internal components. As it works, however, it clogs, and a clogged air filter means less airflow for you.
  • Insulate your ductwork. Your ducts carry conditioned air throughout your home, but on their way to your living areas, they may shed or gain heat. That means less heating or cooling on the other end of the duct – which is where you want it.
