Give Yourself the Gift of Lower Energy Bills

Give Yourself the Gift of Lower Energy BillsThe holidays can be a high-stress time, particularly when it comes to money. So why not do yourself a favor and give yourself the gift of a cash infusion by lowering your energy bills this heating season? Even in warmish Corpus Christi, our winters can call for higher utility bills when we get the occasional cold snap.

Following are some ways to lower energy bills in your home.

1. If you have a chimney, close the damper when the fireplace isn’t in use. Fireplaces draw your conditioned air out and let cold air in, wasting energy.

2. Sealing air leaks is the No. 1 way to save energy in your home. Each tiny crack around doors, windows and pipes, cables and wires extending through exterior walls allows conditioned air out and lets unconditioned air in. Use caulk and weatherstripping to seal cracks and gaps. Also add a door sweep under exterior doors, and foam gaskets behind the plastic covers of electrical switch plates. It’s estimated you can save as much as 10 percent on utility bills a year by air sealing your home.

3. Keep your heating system in good repair. It’s crucial to catch small or potential malfunctions before they become big problems, necessitating repairs and making the system run inefficiently. Among the tasks your service tech should perform each year: test controls and temperature settings; clean burners; adjust pilot assembly; check for gas leaks; lubricate motors; adjust tension in belts; check fan controls and manifold pressure; inspect draft pipe and draft diverter; and inspect the heat exchanger for cracks. Also, change the air filter regularly for greatest efficiency. A clean filter will allow your system to run with less resistance, without slowing airflow.

4, Invest in efficient appliances. Appliances that are rated and approved by the government’s Energy Star program feature a label that shows how much you can save annually on energy. Whenever possible, invest in these more efficient appliances.
