Bad HVAC Habits to Kick This Fall

Bad HVAC Habits to Kick This FallWhen the weather gets cooler and you start switching from air conditioning to heat, it’s important to make sure your HVAC system runs properly. You might not realize that you’ve developed a few bad HVAC habits that are keeping your system from being able to run efficiently. Keep the following in mind, so that you can avoid doing them this fall.

Leaving Air Filters in Too Long

Air filters need to be changed on a regular basis, since they become covered with dust and dirt over time. You should be putting in a new one every few months or more frequently if you have pets in your home. When you have dirty air filters, your HVAC system can’t run at optimal efficiency. Clogged air filters also lower your home’s indoor air quality. Get into the habit of keeping a new air filter in your home at all times, so you can easily change the current one.

Closing Vents

It might seem as though closing vents in rooms or areas you’re not in much could save you energy. However, doing this forces your HVAC system to run longer and work harder than it needs to in order to keep rooms with open vents warmer or cooler. This leads to more wear and tear on your heating and cooling system, which can result in the need for repairs or a replacement.

Changing Your Thermostat Setting Often

Adjusting the setting on your thermostat frequently can also result in more wear and tear on your HVAC system. Your system has to turn on and off more often when you do this. Keep in mind that your home won’t warm up or cool off faster when you raise or lower the temperature. Instead, it will run for longer periods of time, which could shorten its lifespan.
