What to Consider Before Moving Your HVAC System

December 27, 2018 | Blog

What to Consider Before Moving Your HVAC SystemIs HVAC relocation necessary in your home for some reason?

There are a number of scenarios where moving the outdoor half of the central air conditioner, usually situated right behind your house or to one side, makes sense. For example, you may be remodeling or expanding the house, you might be constructing an outdoor deck or fence you may simply want to place the unit where it’s out of sight. These are all viable reasons and HVAC relocation is definitely doable.

However, the process often involves more than people realize, so it’s a good idea to consider the following issues before you make the decision.

It’s not a DIY job.

You’ll need the services of HVAC professionals to move the outdoor A/C component. Refrigerant lines must be disconnected and the system refrigerant removed and captured in compliance with EPA regulations by a person licensed to do the job. Also, the system compressor in the outdoor unit is connected to a 220-volt electrical circuit. For safety’s sake this should only be handled by a professional electrician.

Refrigerant lines need special attention.

These copper lines that carry critical Freon refrigerant are only suitable for very limited bending. Routing the lines from the indoor components to the new outdoor location may therefore require new lines with joints and bends installed. Also, refrigerant lines can not exceed a certain length. Therefore, the new location must be within a certain specified distance from the indoor unit.

New high-voltage electrical conduit must be re-routed to the new location.

The system power shutoff box, normally mounted on the exterior wall of the house, may have to be moved, as well.

Note: After the move is completed, recharging the unit with refrigerant is required, utilizing a vacuum process that evacuates moisture from the lines.

To properly evaluate what’s involved in HVAC relocation, get an estimate from a qualified HVAC contractor before you make the decision. In the Coastal Bend, contact the professionals at CCAC.

Great company. Contacted my current AC company to check on my warranty before charging me anything. Saved me a bunch of money and headache if dealing with anything. Would definitely recommend them and use them again.
