Manage Your HVAC Equipment, Manage Your Budget

Winter can be a good time for Corpus Christi homeowners to catch up on their utility expenses. We use the HVAC system rather extensively for the long cooling season, so most of us can expect to pay high bills six to eight months a year. But in fall and winter, we don’t really need the heating that much, except for the occasional cold front. That means it’s a great time to save on utilities.

The fact is, because we’re not generally subject to high heating costs in our region, we can boost savings by taking more extensive energy efficiency measures for the winter. That includes managing your HVAC equipment.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

Setting your thermostat so that you cut down on power while you’re sleeping or away from home is a good way to lower your bills. Cutting power a few degrees for at least eight hours a day can result in significant savings. Just pile on the blankets at night.

Change Your Air Filter

When you run your system with a dirty air filter, you slow airflow, and your furnace has to work harder to heat your home. A clean air filter allows air to pass through more easily, and your system works more efficiently.

Get the Right-Size HVAC System

If you’re facing the replacement of your HVAC equipment, make sure your consultant sizes your home properly. Some companies may try to sell you the same size system you had before or want to go larger. An oversize system will short-cycle, turning on and off too frequently and never heating or cooling your home adequately, wasting money in the process. Insist that the consultant use computer software that takes into account various factors in addition to square footage.

Schedule Preventative Maintenance

Preventative maintenance helps catch potential problems before they turn into expensive repairs. Keeping your HVAC system in good working order also helps your system work more efficiently so that you don’t spend as much on energy.
