Qualities of a Good HVAC Technician

Qualities of a Good HVAC TechnicianJust as you wouldn’t trust your automobiles to a mechanic you didn’t know or trust, you shouldn’t leave your home’s central cooling and heating system to an HVAC contractor that you haven’t checked out. The difference between quality, competent professional service and slapdash work by an inexperienced or unscrupulous HVAC technician can be enormous, both with regard to money lost and reduced comfort.

Here are some characteristics that make up a good HVAC technician:

  • They can show references and testimonials from satisfied customers, and boast membership in various creditable industry and community organizations. Their technicians are accredited by NATE (North American Technician Excellence), a professional organization that tests HVAC technicians on both general HVAC skills and specific areas of expertise.
  • They arrive on time and look and act polite and professional.
  • They ask you lots of questions about the service, repair or installation that you’ve called them about. They want to know your family’s energy habits and may request a look at your energy bills from the past two or three years. The more they know about how you heat and cool your home, the better job they’ll be able to perform.
  • For a major repair or system installation, the HVAC technician will decline to offer an estimate over the phone. They will insist upon coming to your home and inspecting the situation and equipment that needs to be repaired or replaced.
  • For installation of a furnace, air conditioner, heat pump or other major HVAC system, they will plan to perform a heating or cooling load (depending on the system) calculation, so they can accurately determine what size system is needed to provide comfort and efficiency in your home. Systems that are too small or too big will fall short when it comes to comfort and cost of operation.
  • At the end of their visit, good HVAC technicians will clearly outline the work they plan to do, providing specific information on timing and cost.
